Image of DogDoes your dog or cat suffer with dry itching, flaking skin?  Does your Dog or cat continually scratch, lick, or bite themselves in an attempt to relive this itching?  Many visits to the vet are because we notice our animals scratching at themselves.  The typical cause of scratching is parasites like fleas and ticks.  But once your vet has examined your pet and determined it is not a parasite causing the irritation, the most common usual next determination will be one of the following:

  1. Bacterial skin infection arising from a previous wound
  2. Dermatitis – same condition of dry, cracked itchy scaling skin that affects humans
  3. Folliculitis (similar to Acne in humans)
  4. Ringworm
  5. Allergic reaction
  6. Sweat Gland cysts

There are of course many more conditions that are rarer but the above is a good sample of the more common reasons for your pet to be scratching.

Once your pet has been diagnosed there is usually a course of medication to control or cure the problem.  In some instances the vet will prescribe an antibiotic for bacterial infections, or he may indeed call for a hydrocortisone based cream or tablet to bring the issue under control.

Typically there are also two components to the problem.  The first is the cause of the underlying irritant.  This can be anything from an allergic reaction to a plant or alternatively something as simple as a change in dog food to a more serious cause such as dermatitis.  No matter the cause of the initial flare up, the secondary problem of the dog or cat scratching, licking, biting or rubbing against objects introduces secondary complications.  The site of the irritation becomes quickly eroded and the continual itching and scratching can lead to the skin splitting allowing easy access to bacteria and resulting infection.

Much the same as humans who suffer with skin conditions, your pet too can benefit in multiple ways from a soak in a Dead Sea salt bath.  The Dead Sea salts have a unique mineral composition that greatly assists in the healing of many skin conditions.  The salt component helps clean any open, weeping or crusty wounds, and the unique minerals found only in the Dead Sea help relieve the itching restore the skin to normal function.  The Dead Sea salts also have a calming effect on the pet – unless of course they are adverse to bathing!  The minerals in the salts not only nourish the skin helping it to regenerate but also leave the coat shiny and silky.

So if your pet is suffering at the moment, why not get hold of some Dead Sea salts and treat yourself and your pet to some of nature’s best therapy!
